If you are an international traveler, packing light can become an obsession. Travel vests promise great additional security and packing options. For me, the Scottevest versus the Magellan is the big dilemma. Savvy nomads know that the more you travel and the longer that you are away, the less “stuff” you will want to drag around. A true minimalist welcomes the freedom that comes with owning very little. Less may very well be the new black. Among travel geeks, it is exceedingly cool to be able to sidestep as many barriers on the travel obstacle course as possible.
Once you have made up your mind that life on the road must be confined to a carry-on bag, the challenge begins. Which items will be bag-worthy and which ones must be cast aside. Defining what is essential and what is a mere luxury cannot be determined by one individual. It is best, instead, to know your personal reasons for traveling and select the items that will go into your bag on that determination alone. If you are a photo journalist, for example, your list of nonnegotiable items will be different from someone who is interested in practicing yoga with highly evolved gurus all over the world.
Some street-smart wanderers wear a travel vest mainly because it is designed to carry certain items that are of constant use. These vests usually have pockets hidden in the lining of the jacket where things like a passport, sunglasses, cell phone, keys, airline tickets, and even your iPad can be stored. This is also an easy way to move through security at the airport, hands-free. For women, it can take the place of a cumbersome purse. What a relief for the shoulders as well.
I am currently researching several types of vests and jackets for my upcoming trip to Spain. The Scottevest Women’s Multi-Pocket Travel Vest

is at the top of my list right now. It has 17 hidden pockets. You are supposed to be able to load this vest up and most items are undetectable on your person. This vest comes in gray, black, and red. Magellan has a simpler vest that is worth considering as well. Magellan’s Classic Travel Vest

It has fewer pockets. However, I do like the fact that it comes without a collar. Collars can drive me mad at times. Also, the price tag is appealing, about half the price of a Scottevest.
Once I order a travel vest, I will report back as to whether or not the one I picked is actually as amazing as claimed. If it is, I think traveling will be easier.
It is surprising how very little we actually need while on the road. When traveling is more about experiences than things, nonessentials are easily left behind. The biggest adjustment needed before being able to join the stripped-down model of world adventurers is a mere shift in your thinking. Once you get a taste of freedom, there is no turning back!
