Sorrento, Italy and the Amalfi Coastline

Mt. Vesuvius

If you have placed a trip to Italy on your bucket list, then Sorrento, Italy and the Amalfi Coastline is worth considering. Not only does Sorrento offer loads of things to do, but it sits on the Bay Of Naples with outstanding views of Mt. Vesuvius, the infamous volcano that erupted during Roman times and destroyed the city of Pompeii. When I was a girl, I was introduced to the story of Pompeii in the 3rd grade. Our weekly reader, some of you may be old enough to remember those educational magazines, covered the ancient event, leaving me utterly weak in the knees with gruesome interest. To have been able to spend two whole days wandering the excavated streets of Pompeii was a dream come true for me.

Most people fly into Naples when planning a trip to Sorrento. An easy bus ride will get you to your destination from there. The buses, as in many European countries, are convenient. We wandered down the coastline in this manner on several day trips, stopping in Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. These three little villages are so picturesque.

The isle of Capri is a lovely little island jaunt by ferry from Sorrento and well worth seeing. Visit the summer palace of Tiberius where the depraved emperor use to throw little boys from the cliff tops to their deaths upon the rocks far below. The Isle of Ischia is also close at hand.

The food is spectacular in the Sorrento region, making it very easy to understand why Italian food is some of the most popular cuisine worldwide. The coffee is the

best in the world, in my opinion. Every restaurant or cafe offers impeccable service, too. It seems to be a matter of national pride.

The Amalfi coastline is one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. I have seen some coastlines in my time and I have to say that this one stands out from all of the rest. Harrowing at times and always jaw-droppingly beautiful, it is not to be missed.

I only spent sixteen glorious days in Italy, so it remains on my bucket list of places to return to when I can arrange it. (be sure to scroll down to view other pictures)
